UV paint video

Work Diary

During today’s shoot I completed a similar shoot to my previous one of Megan however for this shoot I used my niece, I did this as she is quite young and I felt that using a child would make my photographs very different and would also mean that I could compare it to one of Hid Said Neto’s photographs. During this shoot I applied the paint in a very different way to my other photographs, for example, I dabbed on some paint and towards the end of my shoots, I then smeared this slightly to make it similar to Neto’s photo. This shoot turned out to be very difficult as using a child meant that it was very difficult to control my actors expression and also to keep her still long enough to take a few good photos which has resulted in quite a few blurry photos.

This is one of my photos from this shoot and as you can see from this photo, the focus on the paint does not look very clear, this is due to the glare from the light on the paint. In this photo it was also very difficult to get my model to look at the camera which resulted in this photo and although I am very happy with how this turned out I think it may have looked better if she was looking at the camera. The composition is also not very good because I have cut off the bottom of her lip whereas if I had planned to take a photo at this angle then I should have lowered it slightly to include all of her lip.
This is another of my images from this shoot. For this shoot I have smeared some of the paint on my models face to make it similar to Hid Said Neto's image of a child with UV paint smeared on their face. I think this is a very effective image because my model is pulling a very natural facial expression and she is also looking directly into the camera which makes the photo look much deeper. To improve this however I will need to edit this as it will look much clearer and the colours will look stronger once I have changed the levels and curves.

Progression
In my next shoot I am going to London to shoot at night, I have chosen to do this because I feel that once all of the places have their lights on at night I will be able to get some very different images. I will be visiting Camden Market, Big Ben, Regent Street and Buckingham Palace. I think these will all look very good when photographed at night due to there being lights in all of these locations. My next UV shoot however will be during my exam because I have two other shoots planned between now and my exam day.

Work Diary

During Todays shoot I visited London to photograph some of the places at night. I felt that this would be a very successful shoot because I would be able to capture a variety of very different, unique images and also by going to London it meant that there were so many places that I could visit. In the End we visited Camden Market, Regent Street, Piccadilly Circus, Buckingham Palace and then along the river to Big Ben and the London Eye. I produced a large number of photos from this shoot and I feel that quite a few of them were quite successful.

This is one of my photos from this shoot. This photo shows one of the buildings along Regent Street and I feel that this is a very good image because this building has a lot of lights on it meaning that it is very lit up and bright. I also like how you can see the light from within the shops as that adds some more colour to the image. To improve this image it will need editing as changing the levels and curves will improve the image quite a lot and I may also lay another image which is quite similar to this over the top and then change the opacity and I think that could be quite an usual photo however look very good.

This is a photo I took whilst at Camden Market. Although I love this photo because of the composition and I love how the lights look, this image is quite blurry. If i have time before the end of this unit I would like to take this image again as I think this would have been a very successful image had it been focused.

Progression
After this shoot I have decided that rather than focusing along this line of lights of buildings I will go back to images I have studied earlier in my topic as I feel that these fit better into my exam topic of creative use of light. I will do this by doing my next shoot of sparklers to make light graffiti as this is a style of photo I have not yet looked at however think it would be a very good shoot.

Jason D. Page

Jason D. Page is a light painter who has been creating his work since 2004, he works in a three-dimensional space to capture light paintings. He says that every light painting is unique and unrepeatable. He is known for shooting alone at night, deep into the woods, he says he prefers to do this as the fear that he feels allows his imagination to run wild with him and this is where he feels he can create his best work.
This is one of Jason D. Page's photographs, by the looks of it, this was produced using a sparkler, firework or maybe even catherine wheel and he has extended the exposure to capture all of the sparks. I think this is a very good image and I would love to be able to take images similar to this however this may be difficult as at this time of year, it is not very easy to be able to buy these items however I will attempt to buy these as I think this work is very effective.

This is another of Page's photographs, this is very similar to the image above due to the shape in the background however within this image, Page has included a model and he has done this in a very clever way by making her the same colour as the shape in the middle of the sparkler object. I also think the use of the umbrella on the model is very clever because as it then makes the sparks look like rain and this makes the image work together.

This is another example of his work however this is slightly different because he has used a cube rather than a circular shape and he has also made the image light enough to be able to see the location of the shape. This is a very simplistic image however I think it would be reasonably easy to replicate and I would like to try this style.

This image links very well to all of the images above because not only has the photographer used the shape from the very first image but he has also included a model and along with this he has left the image quite light meaning we can see the location of the photograph and see that it was taken on a beach and I think this makes the image very unusual.

Influence
I was influenced by Jason D. Page's work and due to this I would like to take some photos using sparklers as I think that these are very effective as a Creative Use of Light photograph because the entire thing creates a very complex yet interesting image.
Summary
Overall, I feel that Jason D. Page's work is very unusual and I would like to look at it more as I feel that this style creates very interesting images and I would like to feel comfortable taking these images as I feel that this could be a very good style to follow.

Work Diary

During today shoot I was able to apply UV makeup to a model, this shoot came out very well due to method in which I applied the UV paint. I started off by applying a small amount of paint and then after taking some images added a little more. I did this a few times until I felt that my model had enough paint on. The images have turned out very well because the colours are very bright and vibrant as planned and I think the way that I applied the paint was very effective as it made it easy to see certain areas of the face. I was very happy with my images and would definitely like to complete more images like this in my next shoots.

This is one of the very first images I took in this shoot and as you can see, I have applied the paint to look just like makeup by applying it over her eyeliner, over her lips like lipstick and also like mascara. I think this style has worked very well and this would be a good photo after some editing. If I was to shoot this again I would try to compose this slightly differently as I feel that this is a little too close to my models face and due to this the paint over her lips is glowing a little too much.

This is a photo from later in my shoot and as you can see I have applied much more paint to this and I think I have done this in a very creative way. I feel that this could be slightly darker on the other hand as my desired effect was for the models skin to not be visible and I will do this by editing the photo however I feel that these images have turned out rather well and feel very comfortable with the style of photos I have chosen as they fit into my exam topic very easily.

Progression

After this shoot I have decided that this is the style of photography which I would like to focus on for this unit, I have decided this as I feel that this along with my first shoot have turned out very well and produced some of my best work. However during my next shoot I would like to use a young model, perhaps my niece as I think this will relate to one of Hid Said Neto’s work more due to his use of a child within one of his photographs. Therefore in my next shoot I will do another UV shoot however I would like to smear the paint more than applying it in this shoot as I feel this will look more natural on a child and rather than just producing straight images, I think it may be a very creative idea to produce a video of my images.

Work Diary

Wednesday 11th March
During this shoot I used my uv paint for the first time to replicate the style of Hid Said Neto, I feel that some of my shoot was very successful however I know that some photos were not as good as others. Due to doing self portraits, it was slightly difficult to take the photos as I could not see what I was photographing, so to get round this I put my camera on my smaller tripod on my desk and stood a mirror behind it, this made it slightly easier to see what I was doing however because of this still being very difficult, not all of my photos were in focus. My first attempt at applying the paint was not very good either meaning that there are not many photos from this shoot which I like very much however I changed the paint and I thought that this looked slightly better. I would never like to do a self portrait shoot again as I felt very uncomfortable however I would like to do a lot more shoots with other people as I think this style is very effective.

This is one of my photos from my first UV shoot, these photos are self portraits and although they were very difficult to take due to being unable to see the picture that I was taking and also needed to use manual focus due to being rather dark, I think these photos came out very well. In my opinion, this photo in particular is very effective because I think the composition is very good due to including some of the shoulder and there being paint there, and only showing half of my face. I also I like how with this photo, the paint on my cheek is smeared, adding a little more texture to the image.

This is another of my photos from this shoot, I am very happy with the composition of this image because there is no wasted space. With the composition, only half of my face is taking up the photo and the other half of the frame is taken up with my hair. I also think this image is very good because the colours all compliment each other very well, for example there are is a lot of orange on the eye, the cheek and also the lips and the hints of blue in the cheek compliment the blue and white spots on my cheeks.

Progression
In my next shoot I would like to apply UV paint to another model, I am going to research prior to the lesson some ideas of where and how I can apply the paint as I think this will mean I can apply it quicker meaning I can take a wider variety of photos. I do however know that I think the close up images are the most effective so will focus mainly on this type of photo.

Patrick Rochon

Patrick Rochon is a light photographer from Monreal, Canada. When he first began he starter by doing light painting photography however he now also does video light painting and performances. He says in an interview that he enjoys exploring her ground and creating images with people in them. For example dancers, actors and artists. He also enjoys doing portraits and has recently got back into producing nudes. He also describes his work as colourful, energetic and high contrast.
This is one of Patrick Rochon's light graffiti images. I like this image very much as I think that the colours are very vibrant and stand out and I also feel that by including a model he has improved the image very much. I also think with this photo that the colours used, match the models facial expression and this has made the photo very unusual. I do not know how he has produced this however I would love to be able to take photographs like this.

This is another of Patrick Rochon's photographs, this is very similar to the image above however within this image he has used more colours and also shone a light directly on the models face as this has created lines directly onto the models face. With this image he has also used colours in the background which makes it stand out more and I think this makes the entire image glow with colour.

This is a very different example of Patrick Rochon's photography, for this he has used colour in the background and just included the silhouette of the model however shown some light on his shoes. I think this is a very unusual photo due to it being so different from the example images I have shown above. In this image he has included very complimentary colours by using pinks and purples and I think this was a very effective way for him to make the photo all work together. I also think he has chosen for the models stance to be this way as it may look as if he is creating the light and gives a magic sort of theme to it.

This is my final example of Rochon's work, I like this image very much as I feel that it is so different to his other images however works very well. It appears that with this photo he has put some lights into the water and taken a small section out. I think this is a very good photo as you can see the glow from the lights in the water and it creates a generally very colourful image.

Influence
I was very influenced by Patrick Rochon's work towards the beginning of my project when I attempted to create images similar to his where I put light onto a models face however mine were not very good due to not knowing how he has done this however I think his light graffiti images have influenced me slightly and the image of the lights in the water links with my glowstick images.
Summary
Overall, I think Patrick Rochon is a very talented photographer and I would like to look deeper into his work as I think he has a very unique style that I think could be vey useful in some other work.

Paul Chong

Paul Chong is a landscape photographer in Shanghai. He has dedicated his life capturing the beauty of nature and scenery in which he creates a colourful photographs. His work is shown in museums, magazines, websites, brochures and even flyers. I find that his work on landscapes is very effective and think that it look very picturesque. I would love to be able to take photographs of this quality because I find that they are very inspiring.
This is one of Paul Chong's photographs,  I like this photo because he has used the weather in an effective way as he has taken the photo this under some trees meaning that we then have the shadows from the tree and I think this makes the photo slightly unusual however looks very good and professional. I also like the colour range in this photo as the greens and the reds in the trees look very nice together due to being quite different colours.

This is very similar to the photo above due to again involving the shadows of the trees however the composition of this image is very different due to this not being a regular shape for a photograph. In this photo we can also see the light coming through the trees and I think this makes the image look very warm and the colours look very vibrant.

This photo is quite unusual due to the angle at which it was taken, most of he other photos I have looked at of Paul Chong's he has taken them from roughly standing height however this photo was taken from near the group however I think this work very well due to the flowers and colours on the ground of this photo. In this photo, Chong has also included the sun coming through the trees which makes it similar to his other photos.

This photo is almost identical to my first example of his work, this is because the trees are very similar and again Chong has included the shadows of the trees on the ground, however in this photo, there is slightly more red in the trees and I think the contrast between the green and the red brings the picture out.

Influence
Paul Chong's work influenced one of my initial shoots of a forest, I was influenced by the sun shining through the trees and have used this style in one of my photos. Although I find this style very interesting and think the photos turn out very well, I did not feel that this style of photo is how I wanted to go with my project and so my later photos are not influenced very much by his style however I think I could have followed this style of photos very easily as I know of some very interesting areas in which I could have taken photos similar to this.
Summary
Overall, I find Paul Chongs work to be very good and I would like to experiment with the style in other aspects of my photography because I feel that these photos are of a very high standard and would love to come out with pictures similar to these.
