During todays session, I was able to attempt my task which I have mentioned in my previous two work diaries and that being using the studio to attempt some sort of light graffiti. Once arranging the studio to create a dark space to shoot within, I had to change the shutter speed only camera, to begin with, I was unsure of how to change this however after learning, I found it very easy to change. Once the camera was at a reasonable speed, I began to shoot. To start with, I tried waving the glow sticks and a torch around to see how the outcome was and I felt that these images were too full of the light strings so I realised you must not move the glowsticks around too fast as this creates a blur. After some practice it got slightly easier and due to this I think some of my earlier images were not effective as some of the later. Once putting these images on contact sheets, I found it easier to analyse what style of graffiti looked better and down to this I now think I have a better understanding and my next shoot will be slightly easier.
This was my very first attempt at this style of photo, this was one of my less successful attempts at a light graffiti image, I think this was maybe less successful because I was moving the glowsticks around too quickly that it made the light blurred and also I may not have focused the camera before taking this image. I also think that with this photo, you cannot tell what it is and this makes the photo very amateur.
This was a later attempt at light graffiti using the same glow stick as above, this photo however was very successful for a light graffiti image and I would like to focus on images similar to this as I like this very much. I also like to composition of this image as the light fills the whole frame and it makes the image look very effective. I would like to edit this image to make the contrast between the black and the green light stronger.
Progression
In my opinion this session was very successful as it gave me a basic understanding of how to take good light graffiti images and I think that now I have taken this shoot it will get much easier for me to take a wider range of effective images. In my next lesson I would like to research about UV makeup and see if I would be able to do this within my project as I think that would be a very inventive way to expand my project. I will also shoot next lesson and I think I will either shoot something similar to this session using glow sticks and a torch in the studio or I might go out on location to shoot some images of candles and the flame of a lighter dependent on the weather.
