Connecting Essay
This is one of photographs of light graffiti from car
lights, I have taken this outside Big Ben in London as I think this was a very
good location for this style of image due to their being a very straight road
and also a barrier on the edge of the road which meant I could hold my camera
still meaning that the photograph was not blurred. I also think the lighting in
this area of London meant that this photo has turned out very well. This photo
shows the streams of light from the passing vehicles and I think this shows
creative use of light in a very creative way.
This is a picture I have collected off of the internet which
shows the streams of light from vehicles outside Big Ben. This photo has a very
clear colour range due to the streams of lights and Big Ben being the same
colour. This photo shows creative use of light because of the streams of light,
the bright light in the right side from where the light has started and also
the lights on the building. The photographer of this has also included some
street lights however these are out focus which means that it makes them stand
out and look different to the rest of the photo.
These images are very similar because of the location, both
of these photos were taken from outside Big Ben and both involve light streams
from vehicles however they are also slightly different due to being taken from
different areas outside Big Ben and the colour range between my photo and the
internet image are completely different. In my photo I have used the natural
lighting meaning that the lights from the vehicles are red and white whereas
the photographer has used slightly different settings meaning his image is very
yellow toned.

This is an image I have collected from the internet of some
glow sticks, I like this image very much because I think the composition is
very unusual however a very good way of showing this image. I think the way
that the photographer has focused the camera on the area of the glow stick
which is not directly in front of the lens has worked very well and this is a
method I would feel comfortable using within my own photos. I also think the
colours in this photo are very vivid which means the photograph looks very
natural as this is how you would see the colours naturally. I know from own
experience how difficult it can be to capture the colours whilst keeping the
camera in focus and it must take some real skill to produce an image as clear
as this.
This is one of my own images of glow sticks. The colours in
this image are not very bright due to me trying to keep the camera in focus
however this still does not look focused. If I was to take more images like
this I would use a macro lens in the hope that I could focus on the smaller
details easier. I do still think this is a good photograph on the other hand as
I like the composition very much, I like this because I have shown depth
slightly within this photo and think it has worked well.
These photos are quite similar due to the subject matter,
this being glow sticks and the colours are also very similar however the image
from the internet is a much better outcome than my photo because of the colours
looking brighter and also the focus is much clearer than in my photo. The
composition of the two photos are also very different due to mine being taken
from above and the internet one being taken from below the glow sticks and I
must admit that I prefer the internet image and would love to take photos in
that particular style.

This is one of my photographs of Regent Street in London, I have taken this
photo however I chose to take this out of focus as I felt that it would make my
photo link better into the creative use of light topic due to only being able
to see the lights within the photo. I like this photo because I feel like it
represents create use of light in a very unusual way. Within this photo you can
see the lights on the buildings, the street lights and also the lights from
vehicles passing. This means that this makes my photo fit into my exam question
very well and I think this is a good representation of it although I would have
preferred this image had I angled it slightly higher to include more of the
lighting and less of the street.
These two images are very similar in many ways, my image was
taken from Regent Street in London and the internet image also appears to be
Regent Street due to the buildings and it also appears that we have taken the
photos from a very similar location along the road due to being ablt to see
both the buildings on the left side of the road however you can also see a
small amount of the building on the other side. Both photos were also taken out
of focus meaning that the lights look more light circles rather than looking
like lights and finally within both photos you are able to see the lights from
the buildings, the streetlights and vehicles on the roads. These photos however
do have some differences, for example the photo from the internet is much
clearer than my photo due to mine being quite dark and the lights in the
internet image stand out more than within my image and the colours are also
much more vivid.

This is a light graffiti photograph I have taken using a
sparkler, I have taken this photo by extending the exposure on my camera which means that the photo takes a
photo of all of the light it sees. I think this is a good example photo as you
often see infinity signs when looking up light graffiti which is why I felt I
would take this photo. Although this photo did not turn out very well because
the lighting in the street was too light meaning you can see the cars in the
background and also the person who drew the light graffiti for my photo is
visible however I do think this is a good example. I also think this photo
would have been better if I had left the shutter speed a little longer as that
would mean that I would have captured a few more traces of the infinity sign
whereas it is quite weak in the image due to only being traced once or twice.
This is a photo I have gathered from the internet, this
photo shows light graffiti of an infinity sign which has been drawn using a
sparkler. I can tell this was done using a sparkler as you can see the sparks
coming off of the shape. I think this is a very good light graffiti image as the
photographer was able to leave the shutter speed off for a good amount of time
which has therefore meant that the shape is very solid due to being traced many
times. I also think this is a very good photograph because the person tracing
the shape has kept within the shape fairly well meaning you cannot see a line
going from the shape out of the composition. This photo has been taken with the
infinity sign slightly lower than the centre of the photo and also towards the
left of the composition. I think this is quite unusual however I like it due to
it being unique and it also means that the shape stands out and contrasts with
the darkness in the opposite corner.
These photos are very similar due to both images showing a
light graffiti infinity sign drawn using a sparkler. This is very effective in
both photos because I think this is a very easy sign to trace and using a
sparkler means that we can see the sparks coming from the sparkler which just
adds more to the photo. The composition of these two photos is also similar due
to both of the shapes being positioned slightly to the bottom left corner. I
also feel that this is a very effective place the position the shape as the
contrast between the shape and the dark corner makes the shape stand out and
create a very good image. There are however a few differences, for example, my
image is much lighter than the image I have collected from the internet and
within my image, the shape is not as bold as in the internet image.

Connecting Essay
This is an example of one of Hid Said Neto’s photographs, he
is the photographer which has inspired the majority of my work however this is
one of my favourite images, I like it because he has used a child which is
quite unusual and this photograph also contrasts the some of his other photos
because he has not applied the paint in a specific technique in this photo. In
this photo he has smeared the paint over the child’s face rather than applying
it to appear like makeup like in his other photos, I think this technique of
smearing the paint is very effective using the child because it shows a more
playful side to the child whereas if he used the techniques from his other
images it may not have been as effective as this is a more mature way of
applying it. Similarly, if Neto was to smear paint on a maturer model, it would
not have the same effect. This example of photo fits into my exam topic of
‘creative use of light’ very well because to create these images you must use a
UV light to make the paint glow and this has a very good effect. This is also a
very creative method to use for my photography as I think that you must have
some sort of skill to apply the paint in a way that makes the photo look good.
This is one of my photographs, for this I have applied UV
paint to my nieces face and then used a wet-wipe to smear it slightly. I applied the orange paint over small amounts of other coloured paints which were already on her face and then smeared them slightly over the areas in which I had not applied the orange paint. I have then composed this image so that my model is looking directly into the camera and the top and bottom of her face are both cut out slightly. I think this is a good way to compose this image because it means that you notice the detail in her face and the paint with it being so close up to her face. I also like this image because my model has very dark eyes which I think makes the image look deeper and this also contrasts with the colour all over her face. I think the paint looks very good because it is very bright due to using the UV light.
These two images are very similar in many ways. In both images the model is a child which in my opinion makes the UV paint look more natural being smeared on as you associate children as being messy whereas if I was to use an adult model I would have applied the paint in a very different method. I also think the composition of both of these images are almost identical, this is because in both images the model is centred slightly to the right and in both images, it is composed so that the top and the bottom are cut off slightly. The models in both of these images are also looking straight into the camera and pulling very natural facial expressions. However, there are some differences between these two photographs. In Hid Said Neto's photograph, the model has very light eyes whereas my models eyes are very dark, although this is very different, both of the photographs work very well. The colour ranges of the two images are also very different due to Neto's image being very blue whereas mine is very orange and slightly brighter.
